![]() In Death of a Gossip, we are introduced to the red-haired, laconic and seemingly lazy Hamish Macbeth, the only constable in the small Scottish village of Lochdubh. I recently re-read the first of the Hamish books, Death of a Gossip as part of my quest to read or re-read the first books of some of the most popular and recommended Cozy Mystery series. ![]() Beaton continues to write new books and both series are often still recommended by site readers. Then I discovered the Hamish Macbeth Mystery Series, the first books of which were published way back in the mid 1980s (even before the Agatha Raisin series), and I loved them even more!Įven though both of these series began so long ago, M. ![]() Quite a while ago, I started reading the Agatha Raisin books, and I loved them. She writes not one, but two series which I considered my very favorite series. Beaton has been one of my very favorite Cozy Mystery authors for many years. Finally there is a set of 13 poems reprised from his first book of poetry of 1955, PICURES OF THE GONE WORLD. These were meant to be read aloud and accompanied by live jazz. Second come 7 poems under the collected title of Oral Messages. The first is a set of 29 poems collected under the same title as the book itself. The book is made up of three sets of poems. Since them I have often been back to this slim volume to read this or that favorite poem in the book, but I had not re-read the whole in 46 years. There, among other things, I found a cave with an island in it, and many square limestone structures, open on their sides, ranging in size from buildings a dozen feet tall to stupas the height of one's chest. Then, following the paths of generations of little kids, I would go into the jungle to the places the tourists never venture, the places without roads. To do so I befriended the locals, the descendants of the Maya, particularly the children, asking them where interesting things were. While Linda preferred the beach, I preferred exploring the ruins which are abundant in the area. Ultimately, I made three trips, all of them to the area midway between Cancun and Belize, preparing for them each time by reading up on the region and its original inhabitants, the Maya. Mazzucchelli autographing a copy of the book at a June 28, 2012, signing at Midtown Comics in Manhattan. In this introduction, Spiegelman called the graphic novel "a breakthrough work." Since then, the book has been translated numerous times, with 20 foreign editions. In 2004, a new edition of the book was released as City of Glass: The Graphic Novel, which featured an introduction by Spiegelman. Nonetheless, the book quickly fell out of print. The original printing was well-received, and the work was chosen as one of "The Top 100 English-Language Comics of the Century".
